Congratulations - Winton Woods High School Glee Give a Note Contest Winners

Forest Park—The Winton Woods High School music department is $10,000 richer thanks to their video being chosen as a second place winner in the Glee Give a Note Contest. There were 492 schools across America that submitted videos, and over two million votes cast to determine the winners.

“I am so thrilled that our video was chosen as one of the winners,” said Winton Woods High School Assistant Choir Director Elizabeth Barth, who was in charge of creating the video. “There were many great videos and very deserving schools, and I am excited about the possibilities that this money will bring for our program and our students. The money will be split up so that the orchestra, band, choir and a cappella groups each receive a part of it. The directors of those ensembles can decide how it can best be used.”

The $1 million awarded to schools by the contest was divided into 73 prizes. Three schools won the grand prize of $50,000; 10 schools won the first place prize of $25,000 and 60 schools won the second prize of $10,000. Videos of winning schools can be seen at www.gleegiveanote.com
"I am so proud of Lizbee Barth, who with the assistance of Fine Arts Director Dave Bell, her music colleagues, and Winton Woods High School music students produced the winning Glee Give a Note video,” said Principal Dr. Terri Holden. “Our students are the school's and the community's most valuable resource. It is critical that we support music education as a way for students to develop their musical talents as well as learn how to be a better citizen by collaborating with others and broadening their horizons.”
The Glee Give a Note campaign was created to bring attention to the importance of music education in schools and also to help provide funding to school music programs in need.  The $1 million was funded through sales of the Glee DVDs – $1 of each DVD sold went toward the $1,000,000.  The Glee Give a Note contest invited eligible schools to submit videos about why their school was in need of a music education grant. After a public voting period, videos were evaluated by teams of NAfME music educators who looked at its relevance to music education, emotional and inspirational appeal, demonstration of financial need and public voting.
“The selection of your school’s video entry as a contest winner is a tremendous achievement, and is a testament to the hard work of everyone associated with your school and your music program,” said Jane M. Balek, assistant executive director for the National Association for Music Education in a letter to Holden.

I’m thankful to everyone in the community and across the country who voted for our video, to the students for helping to put the video together and for being a daily source of inspiration, and to all of the Winton Woods staff, administration and school board for always being so supportive of our program,” said Barth.

Music Booster Talent Showcase

"Want to share your talents? The popular Winton Woods Community Talent Showcase, sponsored by the Winton Woods Music Boosters, is coming up Sunday, January 15, 2012. Go to the Music Booster website - music.wintonwoodsboosters.org for a link to the online application. Online applications must be received by December 30, 2011 to be scheduled for an audition. Auditions will be held the first week in January. Questions? Please contact Kara Barbee at barbee.kara@wintonwoods.org. We know Warriors have talent, what's yours?"

Finally things are in the works for the 2012 Talent Showcase! This year we have an online application that I encourage everyone to use since it will make collecting the data so much easier! The direct link to the online application is:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?hl=en_US&formkey=dG9mYU1KbzJyUTFNRzJIaThibTdSb2c6MQ#gid=0

Online applications will be received through December 30, 2011 (to give me time to contact people to schedule auditions). I have attached a paper copy of this year's Talent Showcase application as well; these are due to me next Thursday, December 15, 2011.

Auditions will be the first week we return from the December break on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. I will put in the building requests, finalize judges, etc.; all I need from you is to help publicize this event!

For those interested in more details:

The only big change from previous years is that there is a $5 non-refundable application fee instead of the $25 refundable fee. The $5 helps to ensure that only serious acts sign-up and it helps to off-set some of the production costs.

Glee Competition Update

The Winton Woods High School Music Department has made it to the next level of competition with the video they made for the Glee "Give a Note" Contest. "We‟ve made it to the next round of judging, and the video is being reviewed by the panel that will determine the winners," said Elizabeth Barth, assistant choir director at the school.

The contest will award $1,000,000, with 73 schools winning between $10,000 and $50,000. Barth said the Winton Woods video team chose a "reality vs. dream" theme, showing the reality of what the band, orchestra and choir programs work with on a daily basis--but focusing on the fact that Winton Woods music students never give up on their dreams.

A Cappella groups travelled to Kettering Fairmont High School

Members of Evolution and Encore, the two a cappella groups at Winton Woods High School, traveled to Kettering Fairmont High School in Dayton to participate in their annual a cappella festival on Saturday, November 12. “This year there were over 20 schools from four states at the festival,” said Elizabeth Barth, director of the Winton Woods a cappella groups.
“Each our of groups got to perform for and have a clinic with two members of the professional a cappella group, Sonos, who competed on the current season of the television show The Sing Off,” said Barth. “The groups got great feedback about their musicality, intonation and ensemble sound and also learned techniques on how to connect with the song's lyrics and how to share the story of the music with the audience members.”
Barth said the students also participated in workshops with specific topics such as solo singing, vocal percussion and technology within an a cappella group. The day culminated with a concert featuring Mister Tim and Sonos. “This festival continues to be one of the highlights of the year for our a cappella groups,” said Barth.

Ellis Williams accepted into the Junior Cincinnati Youth Wind Ensemble

Winton Woods seventh grade saxophonist Ellis Williams was accepted into the Junior Cincinnati Youth Wind Ensemble (Jr. CYWE). "Ellis is the first Winton Woods student who made this prestigious group as a sixth grader, and the band staff is excited that he was selected for the group again this year," said Band Director Kara Barbee. Jr. CYWE is a high-level performing ensemble designed for sixth through eighth grade instrumentalists in the Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, and surrounding areas.

Winton Woods Alumni David Driskill sings back up for Ben Folds

On Wednesday, October 26th, one of our 2009 Winton Woods HS graduates, David Driskill, along with several of his classmates from Tiffin University had the rare opportunity to sing back-up vocals for Ben Folds, a popular recording artist and judge for NBC’s “Sing Off!” television show for his touring performance in Indianapolis, IN.

We are very proud of what David has accomplished in the two short years he has been at Tiffin University and grateful for the opportunities Brad Rees has given him at Tiffin, where he sings with their vocal acappella ensemble, Up in the Air.

Here's the video proof of the aftershow hang that Ben was so gracious to share with us... http://youtu.be/GNOtb6AjNaE.

Winton Woods Music Department needs your vote

The Winton Woods High School Music Department is hoping the two- minute video they made recently will translate into some money for the school's music program. "We've put together a video for the Glee Give-A-Note Contest, hosted by the television show 'Glee,'" said Assistant Choir Director Elizabeth Barth. "They will be giving away $1,000,000 in amounts of $50,000, $25,000 and $10,000 to music programs across the country."

Submitted videos need to depict why a school needs the money to further its music program. Barth said Winton Woods picked a "reality vs. dream" theme for its video, showing the reality of what the band, orchestra and choir programs work with on a daily basis. "For example, we show the orchestra rehearsing in the cafeteria and describe our dream for adequate rehearsal space," said Barth. "Our video focuses on dreaming big and never giving up on our dreams."

The community can support the Winton Woods High School music program by voting for its video when the public voting phase begins on Tuesday, October 11. Voting will take place at www.giveanote.com until November 7. Seventy-three schools will win between $10,000 and $50,000.

"People may vote once per day per IP address," said Barth. "At the end of the public vote, the 500 videos that received the most votes will be sent to a panel of professionals in the music education field to determine who receives money and how much each school receives. I am hopeful this could mean great things for music at Winton Woods."

Soprano Adrienne Danrich visits Winton Woods choirs

As part of the Duncanson Artist-in-Residence Program at the Taft Museum, soprano Adrienne Danrich visited Winton Woods High School on Monday, October 3 to spend time with students in the school’s choirs. “Ms Danrich was so approachable and did a great job relating to the kids in ways that they could understand,” said Choir Director David Bell. “Between her comments to the kids and the hands-on work she did with our Master Class student, she was superb. We were so lucky to have such a world class talent in our classroom.”

Danrich is an alumna of Eastman School of Music and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. She made her professional debut as Pamina in Mozart’s Die Zaubeflöte with the Kentucky Opera and has performed across the country in some of history’s most well known operas. She has also performed as a soloist at Carnegie Hall.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Duncanson Artist-in-Residence program, the Robert S. Duncanson Society of the Taft Museum of Art has selected three artists for this year’s residency: soprano Adrienne Danrich, jazz violinist John Blake Jr., and singer/songwriter Tracy Walker. Each artist will be in residence for approximately one week beginning in October and continuing through November. They will give public performances and engage in educational outreach activities for students and adults.

One Call Now able to handle music groups and text messages

The One Call Now system is based completely upon the information you have submitted by registering for the One Call Now messaging system.

One of the tough things about staying in touch with everyone is that each person prefers a different form of communication--some text message, some email, some Facebook and some prefer phone calls.

By keeping your contact info up to date at One Call Now
http://goo.gl/DLvg3 We can communicate with you via your preferred method.

However, in order for this to work for you, you must make sure to update the One Call Now information! We also request that you add your student's cell phone and email addresses to the Family Update at
http://goo.gl/DLvg3 that way they can be included in One Call Now updates and if you so choose, the text messages as well.

This year when we spoke with the kids, MOST of them indicated that text messaging and Facebook were their most frequently used form of communication of choice. This is now possible!

In order to allow the text messaging to your account (if you have not already set it up) you will need to:
1. Add your cell to the Family Update at
http://goo.gl/DLvg3

WWHS Varsity Ensemble to participate in World Choir Games 2012

The Winton Woods High School Varsity Ensemble choir will be competing in next year’s World Choir Games in Cincinnati. “After our international experience with performing in China prior to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, we knew this could be another very memorable opportunity for our students to build relationships with singers from other countries and to perform for a worldwide audience,” said Winton Woods High School Choir Director David Bell. “We have done many things with the Varsity Ensemble during the past 30 years but competing in an international venue is a challenge we have never before undertaken.”
