Dave Bell honored by the Kiwanis Club
David Bell, fine arts facilitator for Winton Woods City Schools, was honored by the Kiwanis Club of Greenhills-Forest Park as their 2012 “Citizen of the Year.” The club is donating a scholarship to Winton Woods High School in Bell’s name for a student who has been involved in the music program. “My father was a Kiwanis member, and this honor means a great deal to me on my levels, particularly the part that goes to help our students,” said Bell.
Bowling Green State University Middle School Honor Band
Winton Woods Middle School eighth-grade band students, from left, Ravyn Ramsey, trombone; Jack Schramm, percussion; and Zach Mavridoglou,baritone saxophone, were selected to participate in the Bowling Green State University Middle School Honor Band Nov. 9. The students spent the day at Bowling Green, toured the campus, and prepared five pieces during the day to perform in that evening’s concert.
OMEA District 14 Jr High Honor Band
Three Winton Woods Middle School band students were selected for the OMEA District 14 Jr. High Honor Band. Pictured with Band Director Kara Barbee are, from left, Betty Miller, second chair tuba; Abby Ewald, 12th chair trumpet; and Aversa Prentosito, second chair oboe. These students will perform in the OMEA Honor Band concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, at the Anderson High School auditorium, 7560 Forest Road. Tickets are $3 for adults, $2 for children/students/seniors.

Winton Woods musicians make community orchestras
Three band and orchestra students from Winton Woods High School have auditioned for and been accepted into other orchestras in nearby communities.
Ciarra Rucker will be playing flute with the Southwest Regional Orchestra. Their concert is 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, at Mason High School. The orchestra is under the direction of Steven Huang, director of orchestral activities at Ohio University.
Devon Parker and Shanice Wiechman will be playing with the 85-member Great Miami Youth Symphony Orchestra, the official youth orchestra of the Hamilton-Fairfield Symphony Orchestra Association. Both students play violin. The orchestra is under the direction of Paul John Stanbery, and students come from all over the Tristate area to participate. The orchestra plays in public three times a year.

WWHS will be hosting the 1st round of the Ohio Football Playoff games at home, which means at least one more concession opportunity for the fall season. The game will be held on Friday, November 2nd, 2012, at 7:30 at WWHS. You must include the following on the shirt:

Keep in mind…. Shirts will be bright blue (7th graders) and neon green (8th graders). Preference will be given to designs with no more than 2 ink colors (black counts as one ink color).
The winning design will receive a free t-shirt ($10 value) and will see students wearing their design for years to come.

2012 World Choir Champions
Varsity Ensemble came in fifth place overall behind Hangzhou Normal University from China, Mansfield University Choir, the Lehigh Valley School for the Performing Arts, and the SKH Lam Woo Memorial High School of Hong Kong!
Varsity Ensemble was awarded a Gold Medal which qualifies WWHS to participate in the World Choir Games at the Championship Level for the next 5 years!

Greenhills Pioneer Day fundraiser
Music Boosters has a unique fundraising opportunity to sell drinks at Pioneer Days this Friday (6/29) and Saturday (6/30). All proceeds will benefit the Music Programs within the Winton Woods City School district.
We currently have two hour shifts available on both Friday / Saturday. We will have a tent/gazebo set up so you will not be standing in the sun.

WWHS Music Award Winners 2012
The Jack Wimmer Award honors former Greenhills/Forest Park Music Supervisor Jack Wimmer and is accompanied by a $250 Music Booster scholarship. This department-wide award is given to the student who "exemplifies motivating spirit, enthusiasm and dedication to the art of music." The award was given to Kelsey Randall.
The Patrick S. Gilmore Award honors the service and dedication of a high school’s best band students. This award winners were Kristen Budke and Katelyn Budke.
The John Philip Sousa Award is the most prestigious of the band awards. This is in recognition of outstanding achievement and interest in instrumental music, for singular merit in loyalty and cooperation, and for displaying those high qualities of conduct that school instrumental music requires. Adrianna Ivory was the award winner.
The National School Orchestra Award is the highest award given in orchestral music at the high school level. It is presented "in recognition of singular merit, ability, and achievement, of outstanding contributions to the success of the school orchestra program, and of an unusual degree of loyalty, cooperation and high qualities of conduct." Sam Rocklin was given this award.
The James Cox Memorial Choral Musicianship Award was established by the Winton Wood High School Choral Department in honor of former Greenhills Choir Director James Cox. The award is given to a student who demonstrates superior musicianship skills and leadership. The recipient of this award was Adrianna Ivory.
The National School Choral Award is the highest award given in choral music at the high school level. It is presented "in recognition of singular merit, ability, and achievement, of outstanding contributions to the success of the school vocal program, and of an unusual degree of loyalty, cooperation and high qualities of conduct.” The award was given to Michael Spalding.
The Choir Student(s) of the Year Award is given to students who have distinguished themselves in a singular way through leadership, cooperation, commitment and enthusiasm, particularly during their senior year. This year recipients were Haleigh Holtman and Austin Phelps.
The Winton Woods High School Music Boosters Scholarship is presented to the graduating senior who best exemplifies the character and tradition of the outstanding music program at Winton Woods High School. The recipient receives a $500 scholarship. Sam Rocklin was awarded with the Music Boosters Scholarship.
The Choral Service Merit Award is presented this year to the student who invested the greatest number of service hours into the music program. The award was given to Emily Cleary.
The Friends of the Arts Award is rewarded to those parents who will be graduating with their children. These parents have donated time and talent to the Music Program. The 2012 recipients were: Tim Cleary, Teresa Cleary, Kim Sherman, Matt Sherman, Lora Budke and Kevin Budke.
The Warrior Award: Each department is asked to identify one student at each grade level who is either "most improved" student or whose dedication, habits, and work ethic distinguish them in an extraordinary way. This 2012 award winner was Keith Hamilton.
The Academic Achievement Award: Each department is asked to identify two students at each grade level whose academic achievement distinguished them from their peers at the highest possible manner. The award was given to Katelyn Budke and Anthony Boateng.

Friends of the Arts Award 2012
Winton Woods High School Fine Arts Facilitator David Bell (third from rt.) presented parents (l-r) Kevin and Lora Budke, Matt and Kim Sherman and Teresa and Tim Cleary with the 2012 Friends of the Arts Award at this year's Music Awards on May 7. The award goes to parents who have supported the arts while at Winton Woods and whose last child in the district is graduating. Bell gives the award in memory of his father, the Reverend Vernon Bell, who was a friend and supporter of the arts.

Results from Jr. High Solo & Ensemble 4/21/2012
Congratulations to the WWMS Band and Orchestra students for a great day at the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) District XIV Jr. High Solo and Ensemble Adjudicated Event this past Saturday, April 21, 2012.
This year 17 events received Superior Ratings (I), 23 events received Excellent Ratings (II), 4 events received Good Ratings (III), and one group participated for comments only, for a grand total of 44 performances by the WWMS musicians!
There were over 600 performances throughout the day from 30 schools from Hamilton and Clermont Counties.
Students musicians represented Winton Woods Middle School and the music program with professionalism and the directors are very proud!
Award pins for Superior (I) and Excellent (II) Ratings will be presented at the Spring Concert & Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at 7pm in the WWMS Auditorium. Thank you to Winton Woods Music Boosters for covering the cost of all award pins.
Ms. Barbee and Ms. Gardner would like to thank the private teachers, classroom assistants, and WWHS students who worked with solos and ensembles during class and after school to prepare for this event.
