Winton Woods Alumni David Driskill sings back up for Ben Folds

On Wednesday, October 26th, one of our 2009 Winton Woods HS graduates, David Driskill, along with several of his classmates from Tiffin University had the rare opportunity to sing back-up vocals for Ben Folds, a popular recording artist and judge for NBC’s “Sing Off!” television show for his touring performance in Indianapolis, IN.

We are very proud of what David has accomplished in the two short years he has been at Tiffin University and grateful for the opportunities Brad Rees has given him at Tiffin, where he sings with their vocal acappella ensemble, Up in the Air.

Here's the video proof of the aftershow hang that Ben was so gracious to share with us... http://youtu.be/GNOtb6AjNaE.

Winton Woods Choir to Perform with Cincinnati Pops

The Winton Woods High School Varsity Ensemble will join Maestro John Morris Russell, the Cincinnati Pops, guest artist Sandy Patti and the May Festival Chorus for three holiday concerts in December. The performances are Friday, December 9 at 8:00 p.m.; Saturday, December 10 at 8:00 p.m.; and Sunday, December 11 at 2:00 p.m.

“We’ll be singing ‘Deck the Halls,’ ‘Home for the Holidays,’ ‘Go Tell It on the Mountain,’ ‘Jesus, O What a Wonderful Child’ and ‘We Wish You A Merry Christmas,’” said David Bell, choir director for Winton Woods High School. “Another number, ‘I Believe,’ was written especially for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade and was sung by Kermit the Frog on network television last year. It really provides an opportunity to showcase our young voices and youthful energy.

“We’re grateful to Maestro John Morris Russell and Pops Manager Sam Strater for their confidence in our program and our students,” Bell added. “Not many schools have this kind of opportunity.”

Winton Woods Music Department needs your vote

The Winton Woods High School Music Department is hoping the two- minute video they made recently will translate into some money for the school's music program. "We've put together a video for the Glee Give-A-Note Contest, hosted by the television show 'Glee,'" said Assistant Choir Director Elizabeth Barth. "They will be giving away $1,000,000 in amounts of $50,000, $25,000 and $10,000 to music programs across the country."

Submitted videos need to depict why a school needs the money to further its music program. Barth said Winton Woods picked a "reality vs. dream" theme for its video, showing the reality of what the band, orchestra and choir programs work with on a daily basis. "For example, we show the orchestra rehearsing in the cafeteria and describe our dream for adequate rehearsal space," said Barth. "Our video focuses on dreaming big and never giving up on our dreams."

The community can support the Winton Woods High School music program by voting for its video when the public voting phase begins on Tuesday, October 11. Voting will take place at www.giveanote.com until November 7. Seventy-three schools will win between $10,000 and $50,000.

"People may vote once per day per IP address," said Barth. "At the end of the public vote, the 500 videos that received the most votes will be sent to a panel of professionals in the music education field to determine who receives money and how much each school receives. I am hopeful this could mean great things for music at Winton Woods."

Soprano Adrienne Danrich visits Winton Woods choirs

As part of the Duncanson Artist-in-Residence Program at the Taft Museum, soprano Adrienne Danrich visited Winton Woods High School on Monday, October 3 to spend time with students in the school’s choirs. “Ms Danrich was so approachable and did a great job relating to the kids in ways that they could understand,” said Choir Director David Bell. “Between her comments to the kids and the hands-on work she did with our Master Class student, she was superb. We were so lucky to have such a world class talent in our classroom.”

Danrich is an alumna of Eastman School of Music and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. She made her professional debut as Pamina in Mozart’s Die Zaubeflöte with the Kentucky Opera and has performed across the country in some of history’s most well known operas. She has also performed as a soloist at Carnegie Hall.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Duncanson Artist-in-Residence program, the Robert S. Duncanson Society of the Taft Museum of Art has selected three artists for this year’s residency: soprano Adrienne Danrich, jazz violinist John Blake Jr., and singer/songwriter Tracy Walker. Each artist will be in residence for approximately one week beginning in October and continuing through November. They will give public performances and engage in educational outreach activities for students and adults.

Adrienne Danrich (on left with Choir Director David Bell), the Duncanson Artist-in-Resident at the Taft Museum and world-renowned soprano, recently visited Winton Woods High School choir students.
